Farm Coordinator – Urban Farm at Aldersgate 

The Urban Farm at Aldersgate is a 6.7 acre parcel in East Charlotte. The farm plan is designed and is ready to be executed. Using sustainable farming practices, the farm will grow vegetables, herbs, berries, fruit trees and flowers for a market-style CSA, on-site farm stand, U-Pick produce field, and wholesale clients. The farm partners with other nonprofits that offer programs that teach and inspire our community about sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and watershed protection. The farm is open to the public. 



As CFT’s flagship urban farm, the Urban Farm at Aldersgate is a key part of carrying out the organization’s mission. With the mentorship of CFT staff and expert farm consultants, the Farm Coordinator, as an apprentice, will learn to manage and operate a small agricultural operation – including crop planning, planting and harvesting, inventory management, retail sales, marketing & communications, and community engagement. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, apprentices will be considered for permanent employment at one of CFT’s farms. The Farm Coordinator should be someone who is highly organized, detail-oriented, eager to learn, and a self starter. 

This position will be both production-oriented and community-facing. In the beginning, the apprentice will work closely with respective farm staff on site to learn all aspects of operating an urban farm. Over the course of the program, the apprentice will participate in increasingly independent activities with progressively less supervision. 



Crop Production

  • Assist in the planning, scheduling, and all aspects of UFA’s produce operation: seeding; greenhouse management; cultivation and field prep; transplanting; weed and pest management; harvesting, and washing crops.
  • Train and work alongside the farm staff to ensure timely completion of daily tasks.
  • Maintain materials and supplies in working condition and notify supervising staff when new materials and supplies are required. 
  • Operative mechanized farm equipment.


Retail Sales

  • Plan Farm Stand hours and communicate the schedule (weather dependent) with Farm Staff, neighborhood residents and the surrounding community.
  • Set up and take down the Farm Stand for weekly hours.
  • Manage inventory and sales at the Farm Stand.
  • Launch and maintain the online Farm Stand through Flipcause.
  • Administer the Double Up Bucks program for SNAP participants.



  • Capture images and video of the Farm Stand and the Farm to share on UFA and CFT social media accounts.
  • Promote the Farm and the Farm Stand on social media.
  • Monitor the Farm email account and manage incoming requests.
  • Communicate important information with the Farm Manager and the Carolina Farm Trust team. 


Community Engagement

  • Start and maintain a volunteer tracking system.
  • Engage with volunteers at and visitors to the Farm.
  • Provide educational opportunities for the community to learn about sustainable farming, eating local, or other relevant topics.
  • Propose ideas for outreach and community engagement.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of revenue-generating activities, including fundraising and sales.
  • Attend relevant community engagement meetings, such as neighborhood association meetings.
  • Communicate with and build relationships with neighbors and community members.
  • Represent UFA with community members, sponsors, and organizational partners.



  • Continuously seek new ways to improve farm operations, productivity, and quality of produce.
  • Contribute to farm record-keeping, including harvest records, sales, and farm expenses.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment

  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Comfortably able to lift 50 lbs
  • Valid driver’s license

The Farm Coordinator will complete their activities in close collaboration with the Farm Manager(s) and Farm Staff to deliver defined results. Specific authorities associated with this position and their implementation procedures will be determined in conjunction with the Farm Manager(s).



This position is currently classified as non-exempt, with an average commitment of 40 hours per week required. Hours may vary depending upon the time of year and growing seasons- with more hours in spring, summer and fall and fewer in winter. Flexibility in hours may be needed to support the work, including some nights and weekends. Some travel may be required.


REPORTS TO: Farm Manager(s) 

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: This position will not be in a supervisory role and will regularly interface with the President/CEO, Director of Development, Creative Director, Marketing & Communications Associate, and other partners.

SALARY RANGE: $31,200 ($15/hour)

BENEFITS INCLUDE: Vacation & sick leave, group health insurance

LOCATION: This position works on location at the Urban Farm at Aldersgate with occasional local travel to partner sites.
