What is World Central Kitchen?

World Central Kitchen (WCK), founded by celebrated chef José Andrés, is a non-profit organization driven by a mission to feed communities during times of crisis. By preparing and distributing fresh, nourishing meals, WCK offers hope and sustenance to individuals affected by natural disasters, humanitarian emergencies, and more. Their commitment to sourcing ingredients locally strengthens regional economies, empowering farmers while providing essential aid.

Responding to Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina

In early October, Hurricane Helene ravaged Western North Carolina and its neighboring areas. Torrential rains and severe flooding displaced thousands, cut off power for weeks, and left families without access to basic necessities. This disaster underscored the urgent need for community-driven solutions, and World Central Kitchen answered the call.

Together with Carolina Farm Trust (CFT) as one of their partners, WCK launched a disaster relief initiative that provided immediate support to the affected communities. Their focus on nourishing meals brought comfort to individuals facing unimaginable challenges while creating a ripple effect that benefited local farmers and volunteers.

A Community Collaboration: Farms, Volunteers, and Partners

This massive effort involved a diverse group of community members, businesses, and farms working together to deliver relief. The following highlights the full scope of collaboration:

Farm Partners: The Foundation of Relief

Sixteen local farms played a pivotal role, providing fresh ingredients that ensured every meal was nourishing and sustainable:

These farms, most located within a 90-mile radius of Charlotte, provided a total of 5,425 pounds of fresh produce and proteins, reinforcing the importance of local agriculture in crisis relief.

Corporate Partners: Stepping Up in Times of Need

Three major corporate partners—Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Truist Financial—played an essential role in contributing resources and manpower.

These organizations and farms mobilized individuals who collectively volunteered 430 hours to prepare and distribute meals. Their commitment reflected the power of private-public partnerships in driving effective disaster response.

Making an Impact: By the Numbers

The results of this effort demonstrate the power of collaboration and community resilience:

  • 5,425 lbs of produce sourced from 16 local farms
  • $25,000 in revenue generated for regional farmers
  • 430 volunteer hours logged by individuals and corporate partners
  • 23,269 meals produced and distributed

From Farm to Table: What’s on the Menu?

Every dish prepared during this relief effort was crafted with care, balancing nutrition, flavor, and comfort. Meals included:

  • BBQ Chicken, baked beans, and locally sourced mixed vegetables
  • Chicken Lo Mein with fresh veggies
  • Roasted Chicken, zucchini stew, and rice
  • Meatloaf with green beans and potatoes

By using ingredients sourced from farms like Catawba Mushroom Partners and Peculiar Pig Farm, these meals not only provided sustenance but also showcased the richness of regional agriculture.

Strengthening Local Agriculture During Crisis

This initiative went beyond feeding people; it strengthened the foundation of local food systems. By sourcing 40% of ingredients locally, the program provided a much-needed financial boost to small-scale farmers who often face challenges during natural disasters. They experienced immediate economic benefits, generating a combined $25,000 in revenue to help sustain their operations.
