The way we grow, distribute, and access food in America is deeply flawed. While some enjoy an abundance of fresh, healthy options, many communities—especially urban and rural areas—struggle with limited access to nutritious food. This disparity isn’t just about food; it’s a symptom of a larger system that prioritizes profit over people, sustainability, and health. At Carolina Farm Trust (CFT), we believe it’s time for a change.

The Problem: A Broken Food System

In the United States, food deserts—areas where residents have limited access to affordable and nutritious food—are prevalent. According to the USDA, over 19 million Americans live in food deserts, and many of these areas are in urban centers like Charlotte. Compounding this issue, small and mid-sized farms, which play a vital role in providing fresh produce, face increasing challenges due to market competition, lack of resources, and climate pressures.

In addition to food deserts, the rise of diet-related health issues underscores the urgency for systemic change. The CDC reports that more than 42% of U.S. adults are obese, with many living in areas where access to fresh, nutritious food is limited. Meanwhile, only 1 in 10 adults consumes the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables daily, further exacerbating health disparities tied to food inequities. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that prioritizes local food production, equitable access, and public health.

The problem isn’t just about access. It’s about trust in the food we eat, the farmers who grow it, and the systems that deliver it. A sustainable solution requires a complete overhaul of how we view and value food—not as a commodity but as a shared resource essential for community well-being.

The Solution: A Resilient, Community-Centered Food System

Carolina Farm Trust is leading the charge to rebuild our food systems from the ground up. Our approach focuses on two interconnected pathways: The Farm Trust and The Food Trust.

  • The Farm Trust empowers local farmers by providing them with resources such as access to land, training, and markets. This pathway aims to reduce reliance on imported produce and create a robust regional food network.
  • The Food Trust engages communities, making fresh, local food accessible and fostering a deeper understanding of its importance. Through education, events, and direct engagement, we’re building stronger connections between farmers and consumers.

Milestones and Impact

  1. CFT Market
Located in west Charlotte, CFT Market is more than a produce market—it’s a community hub that provides fresh, affordable food while supporting local farmers. With its state-of-the-art commercial kitchen and wholesale operations, the market bridges the gap between rural farms and urban tables. Since Phase One’s opening, the market has connected hundreds of residents with fresh, regionally sourced produce and meals.
  2. Urban Farm Network
Our Urban Farm at Aldersgate and Free Spirit Farm are prime examples of how urban agriculture can transform communities. These farms not only grow culturally relevant produce but also serve as educational spaces, empowering residents with knowledge about sustainable farming practices.
  3. Farm Apprenticeship Program
CFT is committed to training the next generation of farmers. Our Farm Apprenticeship Program offers hands-on experience and mentorship, ensuring the knowledge and skills required for sustainable agriculture are passed on.
  4. Food is Life Program
Recognizing the link between nutrition and health, our Food is Life Program partners with healthcare providers to bring fresh produce to underserved areas. By addressing nutrition inequities, we’re fostering healthier communities.
